Hamilton wins Pulitzer prize for drama: 'a landmark American musical'

The Guardian

Hamilton, the Broadway musical that has been a critical and commercial smash hit, has won the Pulitzer prize for drama.

The judges called Lin-Manuel Miranda’s play – which tells the story of the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton and the American revolution in rap using a multiethnic cast –“a landmark American musical”.

“We had a very good field in drama this year; there was just one play that really stood out to our board and that was Hamilton,” said Mike Pride, the administrator of the fiercely competitive awards for American journalism, letters, drama and music, on Monday afternoon at Columbia University’s School of Journalism.

2016 PULITZER PRIZES: A.P. WINS PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD; ‘HAMILTON’ IS HONORED

New York Times

The Associated Press won the Pulitzer Prize for public service on Monday, for a series that exposed slavery and vicious abuse in the Southeast Asia fishing trade, leading to the release of 2,000 captives and broad reforms in an industry that is a major supplier of seafood to the United States.

One year after magazines became eligible in some Pulitzer categories, The New Yorker received two prizes: for Emily Nussbaum’s television criticism, and for “The Really Big One,” Kathryn Schulz’s ominous article about the possibility of a major earthquake in the Pacific Northwest, which won for feature writing.

The New York Times won the prize for international reporting, for Alissa J. Rubin’s examination of the abuse and injustice faced by women in Afghanistan. And four photographers for The Times won the breaking news photography prize for “Exodus,” a searing collection of images of migrants seeking asylum in Europe, sharing that award with Thomson Reuters.

In an honor that was widely predicted, the musical “Hamilton,” a hip-hop retelling of the founding fathers story, received the prize for drama.
